Rome in 3 days without spending it in a queue

Rome can be explored without losing half your time in queues. The key is to combine a few must-sees booked in advance with several quieter places that Romans themselves tend to recommend.
Beneath the Basilica of San Clemente
Near the Colosseum, this medieval church hides an early Christian basilica underneath and, below that, Roman buildings and a mithraeum. It is a way to see several eras of the city in a single building. Visiting the lower levels usually requires a ticket, so check the conditions before you go.

Orange trees, views and the keyhole
The Giardino degli Aranci, on the Aventine Hill, offers one of the best views of the city at sunset. A few steps away is the famous keyhole of the Knights of Malta, which frames the dome of St Peter's. Go early or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
Statues among engines at Centrale Montemartini
This former power station in the Ostiense district is now a venue of the Capitoline Museums. Ancient sculptures sit alongside turbines and industrial machinery, a contrast you will not find in the most famous museums, and with far fewer queues.
A quiet stroll through the Non-Catholic Cemetery
Next to Testaccio and the Pyramid of Cestius, this cemetery is a silent garden where writers such as Keats and Shelley are buried. It is a good counterpoint to a day of monuments.
