Berlin beyond the Wall: history, museums and neighbourhoods with attitude

Berlin is a city best understood on foot and by hopping between neighbourhoods. Here are the must-sees, how to skip the queues and where the city really lives.
The classics without the queues
The Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial sit a few steps apart and can be visited at any hour. To climb the Reichstag dome you need to register ahead on the official website, so don't leave it to the last minute. Go early and your photos will be crowd-free.
Museums and traces of the Wall
Museum Island gathers several of the city's great museums beside the cathedral and the Spree; pick one or two rather than trying them all. To grasp the Wall, the Bernauer Strasse memorial says more than Checkpoint Charlie, while the East Side Gallery is ideal for a long stroll.
Eating and drinking like a Berliner
Try a currywurst from a neighbourhood stand and a doner kebab, which is practically a local emblem. For something more substantial, Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg brings together producers and street food. For drinks, beer gardens and the bars of Neukölln or Friedrichshain are the natural choice.
Neighbourhoods, parks and transport
Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln show off creative, multicultural Berlin, and Mauerpark comes alive on Sundays with its flea market. The former Tempelhof airport, now a park, makes a one-of-a-kind walk. Getting around is easy by U-Bahn, S-Bahn and tram; buy and validate your ticket before boarding.
