Munich beyond the beer: palaces, beer gardens and the Isar

October 20, 2026 · Streetly

Munich

Munich mixes fairytale squares, Wittelsbach palaces and huge parks where everyone eats and drinks outdoors. This guide covers the must-sees without the crowds, plus the corners locals actually love.

Marienplatz and the old town without the crush

Start at Marienplatz, home to the New Town Hall and its glockenspiel, but come early or late in the day to dodge the tour groups. Climb the tower of Peterskirche (Alter Peter) for rooftop views, then visit the twin-domed Frauenkirche and the baroque Asamkirche, which is far quieter.

Palaces and gardens: the Residenz and Nymphenburg

The Residenz, once the home of Bavaria's kings, is a maze of halls and courtyards, so pick a section rather than trying to see it all. Nymphenburg Palace shines in its gardens and canals, perfect for a slow stroll. Take public transport and set aside a full morning.

Eating and drinking like a Münchner

Beer gardens are the local soul: grab a table under the chestnut trees, and in the self-service areas you can bring your own food. Try Weißwurst with a pretzel mid-morning, roast pork with potato dumpling and a local lager. Wander the Viktualienmarkt for regional snacks and picnic supplies.

English Garden, the Isar and neighbourhoods to explore

The Englischer Garden is one of Europe's great city parks: head to the Chinese Tower for beer-garden atmosphere and the Eisbach to watch surfers riding the river wave. Follow the Isar south, or explore Schwabing and the Gärtnerplatz district for cafes and shops without the tourists.

Practical tips

  • Use the MVG network: U-Bahn, S-Bahn and trams reach almost everywhere, and you validate tickets before boarding.
  • To beat the queues, visit the main sights first thing and save the squares for early evening.
  • Beer gardens let you bring your own food, but you buy drinks there.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: Munich is flat and great on foot or by bike.
