Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a city of cafés, bookshops and long nights. Hours are late and social life revolves around the table.

Notable cafés and bookshops

Café Tortoni, open on Avenida de Mayo since 1858, is a classic. El Ateneo Grand Splendid is a bookshop set in a former 1919 theatre.

Recoleta and Plaza de Mayo

Recoleta Cemetery, with its marble mausoleums, and Plaza de Mayo, surrounded by government buildings, sum up a lot of history.

San Telmo, La Boca and the fair

San Telmo has an antiques fair on Sundays. Caminito, in La Boca, is famous for its coloured houses and open-air art.

Tango and parrilla

A milonga or a tango lesson is a very local experience. For dinner, the parrilla is the classic; book a table at usual times.
