Dubai beyond the glitz: souks, skyscrapers and desert

October 20, 2026 · Streetly

Dubai

Dubai is far more than shopping malls: between record-breaking towers you will find old quarters, souks and a desert half an hour away. A little planning lets you see the essentials without the heat or the queues.

Downtown and the Burj Khalifa without the queues

The Burj Khalifa is the city's signature view, so book your ride up in advance, ideally around sunset to catch both day and night. Afterwards, the Dubai Mall fountain show runs in the evenings: arrive early to grab a good spot beside the lake.

Old Dubai: the Creek, Al Fahidi and the souks

Cross the Creek on an abra, the traditional wooden boat, for a tiny fare, then wander the gold and spice souks in Deira. On the other bank, the historic Al Fahidi (Al Bastakiya) quarter has wind-tower houses, small galleries and quiet cafes.

Eating and drinking like a local

Try a freshly carved shawarma, a plate of machboos and luqaimat dumplings drizzled with date syrup. Deira and Karama are full of simple, excellent Indian, Pakistani and Iranian restaurants. To cool down, order a spiced karak chai or a fresh juice.

Mosque, coast and desert

Jumeirah Mosque runs guided visits for non-Muslims, a respectful way to see inside a mosque. From the public Jumeirah beach you get a great view of the Burj Al Arab. A sunset desert safari rounds off the trip; choose a well-reviewed operator.

Practical tips

  • Avoid the middle of the day in summer: the heat is intense, so plan indoor visits around noon.
  • Dress modestly away from the beach: cover shoulders and knees in mosques and traditional areas.
  • The metro is easy and cheap between Downtown, the Creek and the coast; add short taxi rides.
  • Ask before photographing people and keep public displays of affection low-key.

Opening hours, prices and rules change. Always check official sources before you travel.
