Cape Town: Table Mountain, penguins and vineyards without the rush

October 20, 2026 · Streetly

Cape Town

Cape Town packs mountains, ocean and vineyards into one landscape. Here is how to see its icons without the queues, where to eat like a local and how to handle the wind and weather.

Table Mountain and the viewpoints

Table Mountain is the city's great symbol: go up early by cable car, which can close in wind or cloud, and check its status before heading out. Signal Hill gives a spectacular sunset, and Kirstenbosch is a lovely botanical garden at its foot.

Robben Island and the Waterfront

Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, is visited by ferry from the V&A Waterfront; book ahead, since sailings depend on the sea. Leave time to stroll around the harbor, with its restaurants, shops and seals resting on the docks.

Eating and drinking like a local

Try a braai, the South African barbecue, and Cape Malay dishes such as bobotie and mild curries. Biltong is a great snack. The Constantia and Stellenbosch vineyards are close by, and rooibos tea is a classic for any time of day.

Cape of Good Hope, penguins and Bo-Kaap

The peninsula offers Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, the scenic Chapman's Peak drive and the penguins of Boulders Beach. In the city, Bo-Kaap stands out for its colorful houses; be respectful of residents and ask before photographing people.
