London: free museums, markets and walks along the Thames

London is expensive, but many of its best visits are free. Combine free museums with markets, parks and walks by the river.
Free museums
The British Museum and the permanent collection of Tate Modern are generally free, although some exhibitions are paid. Check the current conditions.

South Bank and Borough Market
The South Bank walk follows the Thames with views of iconic landmarks. Borough Market is a good stop for lunch.
Parks and neighbourhoods
Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens offer space to unwind. Camden and Greenwich bring markets and an atmosphere very different from the centre.
History by the river
The Tower of London and Greenwich, with its Royal Observatory and the meridian, let you cover centuries of history in a few hours.
