Madrid: museums, tapas and neighbourhoods to explore unhurried

September 28, 2026 · Streetly

Madrid

Madrid is best enjoyed on foot and on local time: late dinners, terraces and plenty of life on the street. Combine the great museums with neighbourhood walks and tapas.

The Art Walk

The Prado and the Reina Sofía, home to Picasso's Guernica, offer some of the best art in Europe. There are often free or reduced-price time slots: check the current conditions.

Retiro, Royal Palace and Debod

Retiro Park, with its pond and the Crystal Palace, is ideal for a break. The Temple of Debod is one of the most sought-after sunsets.

Tapas in La Latina and the Rastro

On Sundays the Rastro fills the streets of La Latina with people, and the bars in the area are a good stop for tapas.

Malasaña and chocolate with churros

Alternative bars, independent shops and cafés. To finish, chocolate with churros: the San Ginés chocolatería has been open since 1894.
