New York away from Times Square: viewpoints, neighbourhoods and history

September 28, 2026 · Streetly

New York

New York has iconic landmarks, but much of its charm lies in its neighbourhoods, parks and small venues. These ideas help you combine the essentials with quieter plans.

The Statue of Liberty and the skyline

The ferry leaves from Battery Park and goes through a security check, so it is worth booking and arriving with time to spare. Another way to see the Manhattan skyline is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, ideally first thing in the morning.

Parks and elevated walks

Central Park offers meadows, lakes and paths in the heart of Manhattan. The High Line, an elevated park on a former railway line, is a quiet walk among gardens and buildings.

Museums and viewpoints

The Metropolitan Museum of Art brings together five millennia of art. For city views, Top of the Rock lets you see the Empire State Building and Central Park at the same time.

Eating and going out in the neighbourhoods

Chelsea Market, in a former factory, is a great food stop. Greenwich Village is full of cafés and live music clubs, and Williamsburg, in Brooklyn, has cocktails and concerts.
