Budapest at your own pace: thermal baths, viewpoints and places with soul

Budapest is two banks with strong personalities: Buda, historic and calm, and Pest, lively and buzzing. Here is what to see, how to dodge the crowds and where to eat like a Hungarian.
The great classics
Parliament on the Danube is the city's postcard; book the guided tour in good time. In Buda, the Castle, Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion offer the best views. Head up early, then walk across the Chain Bridge.
Baths, viewpoints and remembrance
The Széchenyi and Gellért baths are a quintessential Budapest experience; go first thing or later in the afternoon to avoid the peak crowds. Gellért Hill gives the best sunset. The Shoes on the Danube Bank are a sober, unforgettable memorial.
Eating and drinking like a Hungarian
Order a goulash or a paprikás, and try lángos, fried dough with garlic and cheese, as street food. For dessert, kürtőskalács, the chimney cake. The Central Market is perfect for browsing, and ruin bars such as Szimpla Kert are a nightlife classic.
Neighbourhoods and getting around
The Jewish Quarter in Pest mixes synagogues, cafés and nightlife; the Great Synagogue is a must. St Stephen's Basilica offers city views, and Heroes' Square opens onto City Park. Tram 2 runs along the Danube and is a sightseeing trip in itself.
