Imperial and everyday Vienna: palaces, coffeehouses and local haunts

October 20, 2026 · Streetly

Vienna

Vienna blends imperial palaces, music and a coffeehouse culture all its own. Here is what to see, how to avoid the queues and where to eat and drink like the Viennese.

Palaces and unmissable landmarks

Schönbrunn Palace and the Hofburg are the great imperial icons; book a timed ticket to dodge the queue. St Stephen's Cathedral dominates the centre and the State Opera anchors the Ringstrasse. Arrive first thing and the gardens will be almost empty.

Art, music and views

The Belvedere holds works by Klimt, including The Kiss, and its gardens are a free luxury. The Kunsthistorisches Museum and the MuseumsQuartier round out the art scene. For the Opera, cheap standing tickets go on sale shortly before each performance.

Eating and drinking like a Viennese

A Viennese coffeehouse is a ritual: order a melange and take your time, no rush. Try Wiener Schnitzel, Apfelstrudel and Sachertorte. For something more local, Würstelstand sausage stands serve at all hours, and the heurigen of Grinzing pour young local wine.

Neighbourhoods, markets and transport

The Naschmarkt mixes stalls, restaurants and atmosphere, especially on Saturdays with its flea market. The Prater and its historic Ferris wheel are a classic outing, and the Karlskirche is well worth a visit. Metro, trams and buses work superbly; trams 1 and 2 circle the Ringstrasse.
