Cairo without the stress: pyramids, bazaars and life on the Nile

Cairo is intense, loud and fascinating: pharaohs, medieval mosques and bazaars share the same city. With good planning you can enjoy the essentials without the overwhelm.
The Giza pyramids and the Sphinx
The Giza pyramids and the Sphinx are the main event. Arrive first thing to dodge the heat and the biggest crowds, and agree on prices clearly before riding a camel or horse. A little farther out, Saqqara and its Step Pyramid are far quieter.
Islamic Cairo and the Citadel
Walk Al-Muizz Street, lined with medieval mosques and gates, and get lost in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. The Saladin Citadel, with the Muhammad Ali Mosque, offers views over the city. In mosques, dress modestly and take off your shoes.
Eating and drinking like a local
Koshari, a mix of rice, lentils, pasta and spicy sauce, is the street-food national dish. For breakfast, order ful and ta'amiya (falafel) with baladi bread. Try hawawshi and finish with mint tea or freshly pressed sugarcane juice.
Coptic Cairo, the Nile and getting around
In Coptic Cairo, the Hanging Church and its quiet alleys are a breather. At sunset, a felucca ride on the Nile is relaxing and cheap if you agree on the price first. Use the metro or ride apps rather than taxis without meters.
