Authentic Porto: Ribeira, Gaia Wine Cellars and Francesinhas

October 20, 2026 · Streetly

Porto

Porto is hills, tiles and wine on the banks of the Douro. Here is how to see its icons without queues, where to try the local food and how to get around without wearing yourself out.

Ribeira, Dom Luís I Bridge and the Cathedral

The Ribeira, a World Heritage area, is the classic waterfront stroll along the Douro. Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge on the upper deck for the views and visit the cathedral. Go early to see the district calm before the tour groups arrive.

São Bento, Clérigos and Livraria Lello

São Bento station impresses with its blue tile panels and is free to enter. The Clérigos Tower dominates the centre, and Livraria Lello often has a line: buy access in advance or go at opening time. The streets around Rua das Flores are great for strolling.

Eat and drink like a Portuense

Try the francesinha, a hearty sandwich in spicy sauce, tripas à moda do Porto or a bifana in a local tasca. The Bolhão Market is a good starting point. The cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia let you taste port wine with river views.

Hills, trams and viewpoints

Porto is steep, but the metro, the Guindais funicular and the historic tram help. Following the river toward the sea brings you to Foz do Douro and its city beaches. At sunset, the Jardim do Morro in Gaia offers one of the best views.
