Seoul between palaces and markets: charming neighbourhoods and street food

Seoul blends Joseon palaces, traditional hanok houses and futuristic districts, all linked by an excellent subway. Discover the essentials, how to dodge the crowds and where to eat like a local.
Palaces and temples of the old city
Gyeongbokgung is the main palace and its changing of the guard is popular, so arrive early. Changdeokgung, with its Secret Garden, feels more intimate, and Deoksugung is lovely at dusk. Jogyesa temple, right in the centre, is a peaceful pause among the modern buildings.
Bukchon, Namsan and the viewpoints
The hanok village of Bukchon is beautiful but residential: go early and keep your voice down. For views, head up to N Seoul Tower on Namsan, on foot or by cable car, or walk the old city wall from Naksan Park. The Cheonggyecheon stream offers a cool walk through downtown.
Eating and drinking like a Seoulite
At Gwangjang Market, try bindaetteok, tteokbokki and kimbap at the counter stalls. Korean barbecue is a group affair, grilling meat at your table, and kimchi jjigae is the ultimate comfort dish. End the night at a pojangmacha tent with soju or makgeolli.
Neighbourhoods with personality
Insadong is ideal for crafts and teahouses, while Ikseon-dong and Seongsu-dong mix trendy cafes with traditional lanes. Hongdae buzzes with street art and music, and Itaewon is the most international district. The Han River parks are perfect for resting and watching the sunset.
