Lima between sea cliffs and ceviche: the colonial centre and Miraflores at your pace

October 20, 2026 · Streetly

Lima

Lima is a city of cliffs above the Pacific, a colonial center and one of the world's great food scenes. Here is an itinerary to see the essentials and eat extremely well.

Lima's historic center

The Plaza Mayor brings together the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Municipal Palace; go in the morning when it is quieter. Nearby, the San Francisco Convent and its catacombs, or the carved wooden balconies of the area, complete a look at colonial Lima.

Miraflores and Huaca Pucllana

The Miraflores boardwalk follows the cliffs past Love Park with ocean views; sunset is the best time. Right in the neighborhood rises Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Hispanic adobe pyramid that is especially striking when lit up at night.

Eating and drinking like a local

Ceviche is a lunchtime dish, best in a simple cevichería with its leche de tigre and sweet potato. Also try lomo saltado, anticuchos and causa limeña. To toast, order a pisco sour, and for dessert, picarones with syrup.

Barranco and getting around

Barranco is Lima's bohemian quarter, with murals, galleries, old mansions and the Bridge of Sighs on the way to the clifftop viewpoints. The Metropolitano bus links downtown with Miraflores and Barranco; at night, take taxis or trusted apps instead of long walks.

Practical tips

  • In winter the sky is often grey with drizzle, so do not count on clear views.
  • Eat ceviche at lunchtime, when the fish is freshest and locals fill the place.
  • Use app taxis at night and keep your phone out of sight on the street.
  • Bring a light layer: the Pacific breeze cools down the afternoons.
