Venice Away From the Crowds: Canals, Cicchetti and Quiet Corners

Venice is unique and everybody knows it, so the trick is to start early and get lost. See the big icons at the right hours, then find the districts where daily life continues.
St Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace
St Mark's Basilica, the Campanile and the Doge's Palace make up the city's most famous stage. Go at dawn or after dark, when the square empties, and book tickets ahead so you do not spend hours waiting in line.
The Grand Canal, Rialto and living neighbourhoods
Vaporetto line 1 runs along the Grand Canal and is the best budget boat ride in town. Hop off at the Rialto Bridge and the Accademia Bridge. Then slip into Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and the old Ghetto, where the rhythm is far more local.
Cicchetti and wine like the Venetians
Do a bacari crawl: small bars serving cicchetti, Venetian bar snacks, with an ombra, a small glass of wine. Cannaregio and the lanes around the Rialto market are perfect. Avoid restaurants with English menus right by St Mark's.
Islands, churches and calm
Santa Maria della Salute and the Zattere promenade offer wide views with fewer people. With time to spare, Murano, known for glass, and Burano, with its colourful houses, make a great vaporetto outing. Remember that everything is on foot and you will get lost: enjoy it.
